Today’s subject is going to be the WMSCOG teaching of the New Name.
As always we break this down into 4 parts.
What is the WMSCOG teaching regarding the New Name?
What is the origin of the New Name, if any?
What does the bible say about the New Name?
Our conclusion of the matter. The New Name has not been given yet, also Name in the bible is not what you think it is.
Then what is the teaching of the New Name and how does the WMSCOG apply it?
Firstly, I was taught by the WMSCOG that God's plan of 6,000 is divided into 3 ages. Age of the Father, Age of the Son and Age of the Holy Spirit. Basically speaking the Age of the Father is from Adam to Jesus. The age of the Son is from the time of Jesus ministry to when the Second Coming Christ Ahnsahnghong comes. The age of the Holy Spirit started after Ahnsahnghong died till the Last Day.
Following that, I was taught by the WMSCOG that God gave a specific name in each age to which mankind was to be saved. In the age of the Father, God gave only the name Jehovah to mankind to be saved. Therefore if you live in the age of the Father you are not saved in any other name than Jehovah. In the age of the Father you must pray in the name of Jehovah, preach in the name Jehovah, call upon Jehovah etc.
Then when Jesus came who is God the Father Jehovah in the flesh, He taught that mankind should ask in His name from now on and that Jesus name was the only name given to mankind to which they could be saved, ushering in the age of the Son. From that moment on the apostles preached in Jesus name, baptized in Jesus name, prophesied in Jesus name etc.
Now we don't live in the age of the Father nor do we live in the age of the Son. Rather we live in the age of the Holy Spirit. The only name given in the Age of the Holy Spirit is the New Name of Christ which will only be revealed when the Second Coming Christ who is God the Holy Spirit Himself who is the same Jesus who died 2,000 years ago comes in the flesh in secret to fulfill the prophecies. Only when the Holy Spirit comes in the Flesh as the Second Coming Christ in the Age of the Holy Spirit, which is the last days, will He reveal to mankind what His New Name is.
Thus the WMSCOG believes that Ahnsahnghong is the fulfillment of God who came in the flesh in secret as the Second Coming Christ who is also God the Holy Spirit. So they teach that the New Name is Ahnsahnghong and that only by praying, preaching, professing and believing in Ahnsahnghong in this age can mankind be saved. They believe that mankind cannot be saved in the name of Jesus, only by the name of Ahnsahnghong.
When you are baptized in the WMSCOG you are baptized in the name of God the Father Jehovah, God the Son Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit Ahnsahnghong for the forgiveness of sins. They take Mathew 28:19 to mean the literal names of God and that without the name of Ahnsahnghong your baptism is incompete.
It is important to note, especially for Christians who understand the trinity reading this, that the basis of the trinity that Ahnsahnghong taught and WMSCOG teaches today is a combination of modolism, monarchianism, patripassianism and sabellianism which are considered pre-nicene heresies refuted by the early church in the 2nd - 3rd centuries.
Essentially WMSCOG believe Ahnsahnghong’s divinity is God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Also that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are literally the same. Meaning Ahnsahnghong who is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit comes to Judge the earth on the Last Day. Ahnsahnghong is the very same God the Father who came in the name of Jesus and died on the cross 2,000 years ago. Ahsahnghong is the very same God who parted the Red Sea and rained down manna 3500 years ago.
Anyways, that is not what today’s topic is about, we will make another article discussing that in the future.
That is the teaching in a nutshell and gives you a good understanding of the claims of this Church.
Now about the origin. Oddly enough I could not find an origin for this one, neither in Um-Soo-Ins books, Ahnsahnghongs Books, or in any other book. Christians for the most part don't believe the teaching of the New Name operates the same way as WMSCOG teaches. Ahnsahnghong himself taught that Jesus was the only name given to mankind both in Jesus time and in the last days.
The WMSCOG is well aware of this fact but makes excuses around it, denying the words of their very own Root of David himself, what's the point of having the Root of David if you ignore what he says? It appears even Ahnsahnghong would not agree with their teaching if he was alive today. Which means this teaching is strictly made up by Kim Joo-Cheol. Who is actually the owner of the WMSCOG according to the Bylaws of the Church.
That is a whole can of worms in and of itself but lets focus on God’s words because the bible is always the best way to gain understanding.
Now it is important to note that there is no biblical verse that hints about 3 ages or mentions it all. The WMSCOG acknowledges this and explains that it is similar to the trinity, there is no verse referring to the trinity itself but through scriptural analysis we can come to the conclusion that the trinity exists.
They say it is the same way with the 3 ages, the bible doesn't specifically say Age of the Father, Age of the Son and Age of the Holy Spirit but through scriptural analysis we can come to that conclusion. Which I believe makes a fair point of argument.
Now we must ask the question then, what scriptural references are they referring to prove the existence of the 3 ages? As far as the WMSCOG teaches I personally don't remember being shown any scriptures in regards to ages in the bible. It was more so understanding that when the name given to man to be saved changed the age also changed. So it is not really possible to show verses about the 3 specific ages because I was never shown any by to confirm it.
Since we don't really have any scriptural references to refute the 3 specific ages, if you would like to see some theology on the different ages in the bible I will put a couple of links in the description that I found interesting and helpful. Otherwise this article is going to be really long and I am trying to get to the main points.
I personally don't think that knowing how many ages there are and which ones mean what is really a matter of salvation. If you are interested in that, research it yourself and come to the conclusion.
However praying, being baptized, preaching, believing you're saved in a different name other than Jesus is a matter of Salvation so we will focus on that part.
What verses does the WMSCOG show that Jehovah is the name of the Father in the Old Testament.
Firstly they show Isa 43:11
I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.
Lets see Joel 2:32
And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance,
as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors
whom the Lord calls.
Now one more.
Psa 116:4
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Lord, save me!”
Here we see that apart from the LORD there is no savior. WMSCOG takes this to mean that in the age of the Father you cannot be saved unless you profess, pray to or call on Jehovah as your savior. Therefore Jehovah is the only name of the Savior in that age.
Now let's examine a few things here. What does the LORD mean? This is extremely important. First the LORD is used in place of God’s Hebrew name. When God’s Hebrew name is spelled out it is “YHWH”. Then the Tetragrammaton was translated into Latin, which became known as “Jehovah” or “JeHoWah”. It is important to note that the name “Jehovah” first appeared during the middle ages when Latin-speaking Christian scholars were translating the original Hebrew text. The reason why they changed the Y to a J or I in some cases is that there is no Y in the Latin language.
Since ancient Hebrew did not use vowels in written form it is not really clear how to say “YHWH”. It could be Yahweh or Yehowah or something else. Also when a lord appears in the Old Testament it could mean “Adonai” that emphasizes His lordship. You can see this used in Ge 15:1-2, Psa 97:5, Judges 6:15 and many others. Another word that appears to describe God is Elohim as well. We will go over Elohim later as that is a whole other article in and of itself.
But in the verses we just read the word for the name of God is “YahWeh”.
Now I have one question. Is this God’s only name that was given to His people in the age of the Father?
Well there is El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)
Genesis 17:1, Psa 84:8-12
El Roi (The God who sees me)
Genesis 16:13, Ps 139:12
Yahweh Elohim
Gen 2:4, 3:15
El-Olam (Everlasting God)
Psa 90:1-3
El-Gibhor (Mighty God)
Isaiah 9:6
Yahweh Yireh (The Lord will Provide)
Gen 22:14 and Deuteronomy 15:4-5
Ish (Husband)
Hosea 2:16-12
I AM
Exodus 3:13-14
Jealous
Exodus 20:5
I think you see where I am going with this.
God uses names differently than we do. It's not like Jeff or Sam. He uses names that reveal different aspects of God and to communicate His purpose to His people. He is the creator who gives names to His people. He is the one who comes up with the names.
Even still if you are going to make the insistence that you need to profess a certain name in the age of the Father for salvation wouldn’t it make sense to at least go with a Hebrew name and not the Latin variant of Jehovah that appeared after the early church? Also if you are going to pick a name to be used, which one are you going to settle on among the list we just went over? Think about it, are you going to pray to Jealous? Are you going to call Ish in times of trouble?
Let's continue. With the age of the Son when Jesus came.
Here is an interesting point I forgot to mention, WMSCOG teaches that Jesus is a New Name that is not in the Old Testament. Therefore justifying why Ahnsahnghong’s name is not in the New Testament, making it a simple matter of history repeating itself. Then let's examine this claim.
Where does the name Jesus come from?
Now I agree Jesus' name is not in the Old Testament. Because Jesus is the Latin form of the Greek “lesous” therefore making it impossible for Jesus to appear in the Old Testament scripture because of course the Jews did not speak Latin at the time of writing the Old Testament.
But was the Latin name Jesus given to Mary when the angel came to her? Considering Jesus was born under the Mosaic Law according to Gal 4:4 it would make sense for Him to have had a Hebrew name.
Jesus’ Hebrew name given to Him at birth was Yeshua or Yehoshua in English is Joshua. Which occurs in the Old Testament. Going further the name Yeshua means “Your Salvation” which you can see in Psa 14:7, 40:16 and 51:12.
Also the name Yeshua or Yehoshua literally translates to “YahWeh Saves”. Or if you prefer the Latin variation it is “Jehovah Saves”. In no way is the name Yeshua new to the people of Israel, but it is of course of the utmost importance because as we see in Act 4:11 there is no other name given to mankind to be saved. It is also important to note that the New Testament writers were Jews so they most likely referred to him as Yeshua.
In the original Greek the name given is Iésous which was translated into Jesus in Latin by the Vatican. It's important to note that Hebrew and Greek do not have the letter J. For instance in Hebrew Jerusalem is Yerushalayim, Judah is Yehuda and so on. So the names that have J in them in the bible are actually Latin names. Which means the early church did not use the name Jesus, in fact the name “Jesus” did not appear until about the 17th century.
Let's focus our attention on baptism for a minute. This is a very big topic for the WMSCOG and it is what separates them from everyone else.
The WMSCOG teaches that there must be a name of the Father, name of the Son and name of the Holy Spirit according to the Bible.
Mathew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Here we Jesus said be baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Now I have a serious question. Among all the names God gave Himself in the Old Testament, which one should be baptized in? What scriptural reference are you going with to prove that? For one Jehovah is not in the original texts of the bible. That is Latin. So shouldn't it at least be a name actually mentioned in ancient texts?
Also wouldn't it make more sense to be baptized in the name of Yeshua instead of the Latin version Jesus that was made by the Catholic Church?
According to WMSCOG when you are baptized you have to be baptized in the name of God the Father Jehovah, God the Son Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit Ahnsahnghong.
Now the WMSCOG says that you must not mispronounce Ahnsahnghong as it is a grave sin, in fact it violates the 3rd commandment. Members are taught how to say it and write it correctly early on. There is no alternative language that can be used, Ahnsahnghong has to be pronounced in Korean as it is the name of God and God came from Korea. Then shouldn’t those rules also apply to God the Father and God the Son?
So far we have seen that even if this verse means you should be baptized in the literal names of the Father and the Son wouldn't it make sense to at least use names that are in the original texts? Just like how members must use Ahnsahnghong in Korean without deviating in the slightest?
Then what does the Bible mean in the name of? Let's examine this.
First the Greek word used for “name" is “onoma”. The definition according to Strong's Concordance is: name, authority or cause.
Specifically in Matthew 28:19 it is the context “authority of”
You can see examples of this in Mt 21:9, Jn 10:25, Lk 13:35.
Also names can mean titles as well if you read Rev 19:11-16.
But you don't have to take my word for it, do your own research and make your own conclusions.
I personally believe that authority makes way more sense considering all the information weahave discussed this far.
Now I know what you are thinking. What about the New Name in Revelation? WMSCOG says that the New Name in Rev 2, 3 is the New Name of Christ ONLY.
Let's focus on that from now.
Revelation 2:17
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
There are some glaring issues with this passage. First we see this takes place in the church of Pergamum which according to WMSCOG 7 Churches Prophecy is the prophetic time frame of 313 AD to 538 AD. Which according to the timeline would mean Christ should appear with the New Name and the Hidden Manna during this time which did not happen.
If this is referring to the actual Church in Pergamum that John sent the letter to then we have the same problem arising in the timing of events.
Now I know that WMSCOG will say that not everything in the prophecy is meant for the church at that time specifically or even that timeframe that they alleged the church prophecy is fulfilled. Which is extremely convenient and in my opinion defeats the purpose of the 7 Churches being a timeline.
But let's give them the benefit of the doubt and continue our study to make sure we aren't missing anything.
First thing we must understand is who is going to receive this stone? The one who overcomes. What do they overcome?
Here are a few verses giving us an idea what it means to overcome and what to overcome.
1 Jn 5:4-5, 1 Jn 4:3-4, Jn 16:33, 1 Jn 2:13, Rev 15:2, Rev 21:7
Basically we need to overcome the evil one, the antichrist, sin, the world and so on.
I would like to draw attention to a couple verses.
Lk 21:36
Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
Rev 3:10
Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.
There is an hour of trial that is coming and the point of overcoming is to be able to stand blameless before the Son of Man.
Now here is the question. Do you need the New Name to be the one who overcomes? If you need the New Name to overcome then why is the New Name given is only given to the one who overcomes? That’s like saying after you put out the fire I will give you a fire extinguisher. If the fire is put out, what is the point of having a fire extinguisher?
Let's analyze a little bit further. Let's say you as a current member have the New Name of Christ already which according to WMSCOG is Ahnsahnghong. Then who’s name do you receive after you overcome? Does God have a fourth name to give you in that sense? Does Christ have a New New Name? Of course not.
Let's see Rev 2:17 again.
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
A couple other points I would like to make. Who represents stone in the bible? Of course Christ does but is it Christ only?
If you read 1 Pt 2:5 the Bible says we too are living stones. Also this new name is given to them by God. Is this the first time God has given His chosen people new names? No, we can see Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, Jacob to Israel, Simon to Peter, Saul to Paul and so on and so forth. In the same way, the person who overcomes God will give them a New Name just like He has done many times before.
Also, this new name that God gives is only known to the one who receives it, meaning if this name is Christ's new name of Ahnsahnghong, it can't be known by multiple people. This new name is a personal new name known only to the one God gives it to, no one else will know it.
Again this is the Church in Pergamum. But the problem here is that if the New Name is Ahnsahnghong, he doesn’t appear for a long long time. So how can the Church in Pergamum received that name if he hasn't come in the flesh yet. Not only that but this Church is still considered to be in the Age of the Son, so even if they did receive the New Name it would be meaningless to them since it was not the Age of the Holy Spirit yet.
Because in the WMSCOG you can only be saved by the name of the savior in your specific age. If you lived in the age of the father and believed in the name Jesus, you would not be saved. If you received the name Ahnsahnghong in the age of the son, you would not be saved and so on and so forth.
Let's move on.
Rev 3:11-12
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.
Here again we see that those who overcome will be a pillar in the temple of God and they will never leave it. At that time the ones who overcome will have God’s name, name of New Jerusalem and Jesus’ New Name.
We run into a similar issue here as the other verse we just saw. If Christ comes in the flesh and has a New Name so that we can overcome through that name, then what will be the new name of Christ when we overcome? Is there a New New Name or a 4th name that we need? I don't think so.
Also this is the Church of Philadelphia. Same problem occurs again, Ahnsahnghong doesn’t appear until about 100 years later in the Church of Laodicea according to the timeline. Then how was the Church in Philadelphia supposed to receive Christ’s New Name if He hasn’t appeared yet? Shouldn’t the New Name appear in the Church of Laodicea where Ahnsahnghong appeared according to prophecy?
Also what is the temple of God referring to? Obviously not the physical temple but the spiritual one. So then the blessings given here are spiritual and not physical.
Now if this New Jerusalem is God the Mother as the WMSCOG teaches then I have a question. Did Mother appear in the Church of Philadelphia? If she didn’t appear then how could the Church in Philadelphia have that promise of having her name written on them?
If the name of God is so important in the WMSCOG then when you pray to Mother why don’t you use her real name? Why do you refer to the title only? If someone else has the title New Jerusalem then would you be praying to them by accident?
In Revelation 13 the number of his name is 666 right? But what do we say that is? It is the title of the Pope “Vicarius Filii Dei”? But is that the actual name of the Pope? No, it is the title. It is actually a fake title that the SDA claimed the Pope had and then the SDA later apologized for the false accusation, but that is a different story for a different time.
My point is that even the WMSCOG used names and titles interchangeably, but when it comes to other churches they are wrong? Isn’t that being a little hypocritical?
I was also told by WMSCOG that in order to overcome you have to be a pillar in the temple of God quoting Ephesians and 1st Peter.
Let's see really quick.
Ep 2:19-22
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
Who is being built? It is the church or people of God. Here we see that we are being built, meaning that we are in the process of being built. The only thing that has been built, as in past tense, is the foundation. Then who is the foundation? Christ, Prophets and the Apostles. The foundation is always laid first, then you can start the process of building the dwelling on top of it. That is the people of God are being built after the foundation is laid.
1 Pt 2:5
you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Now does it say that you have been built or you were built? No, it says that you are being built. As being in the process of. Meaning there is still a chance that you may be removed or not have adequate material. The only thing that was built is the foundation which Christ and the Apostles established. In Rev 3 it describes a time where if you overcome you are a fixed pillar that will never leave. You will be the finished final product, then you will receive the New Name. So it has very different contexts.
Then what about the New Name of Christ? Well let's see a few verses about this.
Rev 19:11-16.
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords.
Here we see the riders name is Faithful, True, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Word of God. Then among these should we consider them among the prospective New Names? Technically Jesus never referred to Himself as any of these when He was alive so they could be considered new. Also the name Jesus which is Latin is new since it appeared in the 1600’s. So technically Jesus could be considered a New Name for Christ actually.
To make a simple conclusion to a rather long and drawn out subject.
In Mt 18:19 to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit simply means being baptized in the authority of.
I also find it fascinating that out of all the names WMSCOG chooses to baptize people in, they choose the Latin names Jehovah and Jesus that were never in the ancient texts. Meaning the same language used to give you 666 aka Mark of the Beast is the same language of names you are baptized in to be saved in the WMSCOG.
The new name in revelation 2:17 is a special personal gift given to the person who overcomes what is about to happen to everyone on earth.
In Rev 3:11-12 those who overcome are made a pillar in the spiritual temple of God that they will never leave. After that Christ will write on them His New Name.
Please consider the following verse as well.
Ephesians 1:20-21
“ he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.”
According to this verse Jesus was the name above all names in the previous age and is the name above all names even in our age. So either the WMSCOG is wrong or Paul is wrong, choose wisely.
Again if I am wrong please correct me or if you have questions please let me know. I will see you in the next article.
